There is a longstanding tradition of music-making at the school and it plays an integral part in our cultural life. We encourage all students to learn a musical instrument and over 300 boys do so assisted by 35 specialist members of the Music Staff. Performance opportunities are available to all these boys, as well as those who learn out of school, in the two symphony orchestras, three string orchestras, two concert bands, two stage bands, various chamber ensembles, and the three main school choirs which alone total 300 boys. Major school concerts, student recitals and church services are a feature of the music calendar.
In the classroom music is a core subject up to Year 7 and elective subject from Year 9 and the school’s first class teaching and performing facilities greatly enhance.
We have a strong focus on drama and productions occur at all levels in the school. In the Junior School opportunities are presented through the Drama Club and recent productions such as Go Noah! (2009), Night at the Museum (2012) and What a Night! (2013).
Recent Middle School productions have included Monkey (2011), The Grimm Project (2012) and Holes (2013) while the Senior School dramatic and musical productions in recent years have included Cloudstreet (2011) ,Sweeney Todd (2012) and Amadeus (2013). Drama is offered as an elective subject from Year 7 to Year 10 with a intensive program that includes workshop productions of Shakespeare and devising theatre. Theatre Studies is offered at the VCE level for Senior students in Year 11 and 12. Drama provides many opportunities for boys to be involved as members of cast, lighting, sound, costume, make up, set design and stage management. Our productions are often made in conjunction with local girls’ schools and our boys also participate in their productions.
