Sport and Activities

Sport at Camberwell Grammar School caters for all age groups and abilities in a positive environment and aims to encourage physical activity routines that endure into adulthood. Our primary focus is on participation, and we believe strongly that participation in sport teaches students valuable lessons about life. At the same time, we are proud of our ability to field competitive teams in all sports within the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV).

A co-curricular sport program within a school helps to establish many tangible and intangible qualities that contribute to the culture, standard and tone of the school. Participation in sport, as in all co-curricular programs, develops important relationships between students and staff and provides additional role-modelling in less formal environments than the classroom.

All boys participate in the sport program. In the Junior School this occurs during the school day with the occasional sports afternoon. From Middle School onwards boy are involved for at least two seasons – winter and summer - as part of their school commitments and all first team representatives are expected to do a third season in Spring. Typically, each team trains twice during the week after school. As the majority of sports compete on Saturday mornings students are asked to keep this time free of any external commitment. Transport is provided to external training venues and many opposing schools’ campuses on Saturdays.

We have an extensive Activities program. In the Junior School we offer Club Norge which includes a range of fun activities, the Drama Club, The Writers’ Club and Chess. We offer a full program in the Middle and Senior Schools on Friday afternoons.  Boy participate in a wide variety of service and outdoor activities as well as specialist activities often based around the expertise of individual staff members. These change over time and range from sailing, paper recycling and community service to film appreciation and magic & juggling. A number of boys become active in the Cadet Unit which is available to Senior School boys. We also offer extensive opportunities for boys in the areas of inter-school debating and chess where the school has enjoyed ongoing success for a number of years.
