John Tuckfield joined the School in 1988. He has been teaching Latin ever since, including a year at Stamford School in England, and is a past Head of Department and Curriculum Co-ordinator for the School. Through the Murdoch Centre, he has spearheaded the development of Academies and Centres of Excellence in the School and conducted research on issues key to student learning and teacher effectiveness, such as self-regulation and growth learning.
John holds a doctorate from the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education, investigating language learning in Victorian Independent Schools. He has designed curriculum at a state and federal level and worked closely with ACARA and the VCAA on several projects. He has led Latin in Victoria through roles in the Classical Association of Victoria and as well as running conferences he teaches trainee Latin teachers for the University of Melbourne.
In 2019 he was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education.
He had a year off in 2022; a highlight was a six day hike across the Alps from France to Italy following the route that Hannibal took with his elephants in the 218 BC.
